Our power-assisted steering products are supplied by Ultraflex, who are based in Italy & distributed worldwide, with over 70 years’ experience in manufacturing. Larger boats usually require bigger steering systems that can handle higher loads, and once the combined power of the boat’s engines exceeds around 150hp, if only hydraulic steering alone is installed it can make steering quite difficult.
For example, a lot of force may be required to turn the steering wheel if you need to quickly turn the boat into a tight turn, and quite a few turns of the wheel may be required. You may also need to apply quite a bit of pressure to the steering wheel even when the boat is travelling in a straight line. Power-assisted steering gives you ‘fingertip control’ which greatly improves the handling experience & overall safety of the boat whilst it is moving at high speed.
The ‘power-assisted’ reference means that the boat uses electric power to assist its hydraulic steering system. An on-demand, electronically controlled hydraulic pump is used to boost the hydraulic fluid being sent from the helm pump to the steering cylinder, which makes steering the boat quite light and easy, similar to how it would feel steering a car. Power-assisted steering systems are normally used on outboard boat motors with a power level of 150hp and above, that already have hydraulic steering installed. Power-assisted steering is most commonly found on:
You would purchase the MasterDrive Power Assisted Steering System if you already had a hydraulic steering system on your boat (such as the Ultraflex SilverSteer system) that you wanted to upgrade with power-assisted steering. Ultraflex recommends that engine configurations of more than 300hp should have both the SilverSteer and MasterDrive steering systems installed for ease & safety of steering operation.
The MasterDrive product will work on boats that have either one or two steering stations, but if your boat has two steering stations (e.g. an additional smaller one at the stern as well as the main helm) you will also need to purchase a MasterDrive Dual Station Steering System and install both products.
Using MasterDrive, the skipper can dial in the performance of the steering system in accordance with the conditions of the boat. So, whether trolling, cruising or high-performance boating the skipper will always enjoy finger-tip operation of the steering system whilst simultaneously minimising power consumption.
