If you want proper distress-calling safety without paying for features you don't need, the GME GX710D VHF radio hits the sweet spot.
It's built with a fully sealed, IP67 rated front panel, so rain, spray and the odd wave over the bow won't be a problem, and the large, bright LCD display stays easy to read at the helm even in direct sun.
The GX710D pumps out 25 watts across every marine VHF channel, switching down to 1 watt when you're working close range in a marina or harbour. Class D Digital Selective Calling (DSC) comes with GPS built right in, so if you ever need to hit that distress button, your exact position goes out automatically, no extra GPS antenna or wiring needed. You've also got dual watch, triple watch and scan as standard, plus a foghorn function and Man Overboard (MOB) alert.
It connects via NMEA 0183, so it'll talk to most existing chartplotters and navigation gear already on your boat. This one suits boaties after solid DSC safety compliance without stepping up to a radio with AIS built in, if you want to see other vessels' AIS traffic too, take a look at the GX720AD instead (see related products).

Q: Do I need to do anything before the DSC distress function works?
Yes, before Digital Selective Calling (DSC) will work you need an MMSI number programmed into the radio. Most marine electronics installers can do this for you in a few minutes.
Q: Will this radio show my exact position if I hit the distress button?
Yep. The GX710D has GPS built right in, so when you send a DSC distress call it automatically includes your boat's position, no extra GPS antenna or wiring needed.
Q: Can I connect this to my existing plotter?
Yes, it connects via NMEA 0183, so it'll talk to most existing chartplotters and navigation gear already on your boat.
Q: Is it tough enough to handle spray and rain at the helm?
The front panel is rated IP67, so it's built to cope with rain, spray and the odd wave over the bow. Just don't dunk the whole unit underwater.
Q: What's the difference between this and GME's other VHF radios?
The GX710D sits between the entry-level GX700 and the GX750, giving you Class D DSC and GPS without stepping up to a radio with AIS built in. If you want to see other vessels' AIS traffic too, check out the GX720AD.
