GME's flagship VHF radio, adding a built-in AIS receiver and NMEA 2000 connectivity to Class D DSC safety and integrated GPS.
If you want the full works in a VHF radio, AIS traffic, DSC safety and easy connection to a modern NMEA 2000 network, the GME GX720AD is GME's flagship fixed mount unit.
It's built with a fully sealed, IP67 rated front panel and a large, bright LCD display that stays easy to read at the helm in direct sun.
Transmission is 25 watts across every marine VHF channel, switching down to 1 watt for close range work. Class D DSC comes with GPS built in, so a distress call automatically carries your position with it. Dual watch, triple watch and scan are all standard. The built-in AIS receiver lets you see AIS-equipped traffic around you straight on your connected plotter, sharing your existing VHF antenna rather than needing a separate one. NMEA 2000 sits alongside NMEA 0183, so it drops cleanly into a modern network backbone instead of a legacy point-to-point wiring run.
This one suits offshore and coastal boaties, and anyone already running an NMEA 2000 setup on board. If you're mostly inshore and don't need AIS or N2K, the GX710D covers the core DSC safety features at a lower price (see related products).

Q: What does the AIS receiver actually do for me?
It picks up AIS signals broadcast by other vessels, ships, commercial traffic and other AIS-equipped boats, and shows them on your connected plotter, so you can see what's out there, especially handy at night or in poor visibility.
Q: Do I need a separate antenna for AIS?
No, the GX720AD's built-in AIS receiver shares your existing VHF antenna, so there's no separate AIS antenna to run.
Q: What's the benefit of NMEA 2000 over NMEA 0183?
NMEA 2000 lets you drop straight into a modern network backbone with a single cable run, rather than wiring up individual point-to-point NMEA 0183 connections. If your boat already runs an N2K network, this radio slots straight in.
Q: Do I still need to program an MMSI?
Yes, DSC distress calling won't work until an MMSI is programmed into the radio, same as any DSC-equipped VHF.
Q: Is this overkill for a boat I mostly use close to shore?
Not necessarily, if you're already running NMEA 2000 gear it's a clean fit regardless of where you boat. But if you're mostly inshore and don't need AIS or N2K, the GX710D covers the core DSC safety features at a lower price.
